Server running 2012 r2 , Host running 2 hyper v virtual machines
the first machine acts as the domain controller and has 2 virtual disk
one for the DC and the other for Network share drives

The 2nd VM is running quickbooks and only has 1 virtual disk

Just curious what anyone with experience recommends for back ups .

We have been using What comes with windows and backing up to a NAS which also gets backed up to a cloud .

But the last week or so i have been running into issues the back ups are failing but not everyday and not all the time . They fail at different points some at 1.2TB others at 1.7TB . I cant find any issues so i am thinking when a user remotes in during the back up that might be the problem . I dont know that for sure just my best guess .

Anyway been looking around for some other software that could possibly make the back up faster ,more secure and most importantly if we had to recover make the recovery the easiest and fastast . Less down time the better ..

Synology Active back up
Nakivo
Veema

are the 3 on my list , They all have there ups and downs but unfortunately none are as simple and straight forward as Windows back up ...

Veema i have to create its own VM to run on ....

active back up i havent even made it through the install docs

and nakivo i havent tried anything with because i am having issues getting it to update

What i am really looking for is something easy to install and configure that would hopefully create VHD backs ups so i could avoid needing to recreate the VMs if i ever needed to recover .
Anyway just looking for some ideas and opinions .

Thanks very much for any info you can share.

We use Veeam at work. We keep 3 weeks of incremental backups and it rolls fulls every Sunday.

I ran into an issue Monday this week where one of our VM's (we use hyper-v) the VM runs windows server 2008 R2 with our ERP system on it and SQL 2005...... yeah its old but we are in the middle of moving to a new cloud base system..... anyway, the timeclock portion of the ERP system stopped working. I tried to restore a few files to see if that would make it work but it did not.

While veeam has the option to do a complete file restore it also has an option for complete VHD restore. I ended up restoring the VHD to another location, went into hyper-v and attached it as a new computer to test everything out. once i was sure everything was ok, i told Veeam to restore the VHD back to its original location. Once done the VM booted up like nothing had changed, the ERP work fine, the timeclocks were working again. The only issue we had is i restored the VHD from Saturday nights backup so we lost 2 peoples times from sunday which were easailly put back in.

It took ruffly 3 hours from the time the problem was indetified to fully back up and running. Once the solution was found out, it only tool 30 min to do the VHD restore and start the VM back up. It was the first time ive ever had to do it so there was a learning curve and testing to be done. Next time i know and will be a lot quicker to the solution.

So do you have Veeam running on its own VM ? When i spoke to Sales how i was told it needed to be installed I had to create a VM for it . I can create a VM but i have some space constraints . I didnt do the original set up of the server But it was set up with MBR so although the server is 4 TB and i am only using 2 i dont have access to the other free space . I am not sure what the plan was and i know i can format and repartition but i would have to do it on a 3 day weekend which are few and far between and i have some concerns with my abilities.
I have never done a full format and restore of a server .

Thanks for the recommendation i am hoping that i hear from Nakivo's tech support so i can demo their platform . It runs on the NAS and does full back ups as well as uses the same Snapshot as hyper V .

Thanks again

We actually have Veeam running on a second server.

Since our main server has enough disc slots we run 2 5x2TB (7.64TB) raid 5 arrays. 1 raid array has 19 VM's while the other one only has 1VM, but that one VM holds all our files.

The Backup server runs a 4x8TB raid 5 for 21.8TB. It does 21 days of incremental backups and it rolls fulls every Sunday and uses about 14TB for the backups.
