Question Server crash after running Unigine Heaven

Sep 6, 2019

I've been experiencing issues with my config lately. The problem started to appear after I used my virtual machine (Macosx) to run a game or a stress test (I installed WoW today and used Unigine Heaven to replicate the issue experienced with the game).

The Unigine test runs for a minute or so, then the server/computer just reboots out of nowhere.

I am unsure which log messages I should look for, but I looked both into var/log/messages and var/log/systlog without seeing anything significant. Please feel free to tell me what I should outpost here or test further.

Video card and VM work fine when playing back regular things (4K youtube videos, netflix, regular usage of Adobe Photoshop/Illustrator... always on and running hours on end) and only seems to show this behavior under load (games or benchmark test), but overheating didn't seem to be the cause (I could be wrong, but I've experienced times where the card was very hot without any running issue, and on the other end Unigine Heaven crashed even when the card was only starting to heat up).

It sounds like a hardware issue, likely the power supply (?) but I thought I would ask here as maybe someone has an idea how to identify the source further (I'd rather not have to unplug everything and RMA my powersupply before knowing it is the actual reason). Absolutely all the gear below is brand new except for the graphics card, which however didn't seem to have issues up to now.

Below are some specs and config:

  • MOBO: Gigabyte Aorus Master
  • CPU: i9-9900K
  • GPU: AMD Radeon Vega Frontier Edition (passthrough to my Mac VM) second-hand
  • RAM: 64GB G-skill Trident-Z (32GB allocated to the VM)
  • PSU: Corsair RMi Series RM1000i (1000w)
Hypervisor: Proxmox 5.4
VM: Macos Mojave 10.14.4
