I'm sure this has been asked, but all the posts I saw were from 2-3 years ago.

My question is whether or not it would be worth it to purchase this server and upgrade the RAM and graphics in order to make a decent rig capable of gaming, video editing, and 3D modeling like 3DS Max. According to the Dell website, it has a couple PCI slots, so theoretically, couldn't a card fit? I obviously don't know too much about servers.

As per the template:
Approximate Purchase Date: if the price is right, within a month or so.

Budget Range: (e.g.: 300-400) Before / After Rebates; Before / After Shipping: $200 for the server, plus ~$200 for a graphics card. Again, only if it's a good idea.

System Usage from Most to Least Important: (e.g.: Folding@Home, gaming, surfing the internet, watching movies): Gaming, media production, watching movies, web

Are you buying a monitor: Yes / No: No

Parts to Upgrade: (e.g.: CPU, mobo, RAM) **Include Power Supply Make & Model If Re-using**
Video Card, RAM

Do you need to buy OS: No.

Preferred Website(s) for Parts: wherever the best deals can be found, but I like tigerdirect.

Location: City, State/Region, Country - Indianapolis, IN, USA

Parts Preferences: by brand or type: no preference

Overclocking: Yes / No / Maybe: Maybe

SLI or Crossfire: Yes / No / Maybe: No

Your Monitor Resolution: (e.g.: 1024x768, 1280x1024, 1440x900, 1600x1200, 1680x1050, 1920x1080, 1920x1200 or if you're upgrading please state what you'd want to get): 1920x1080

Additional Comments: (e.g.: Need to have a window and lots of bling, I would like a quiet PC. Please also list specific software or games you're using): I just want a decent PC for playing games like DayZ and GTA with my friends, but I don't have much money.

And Most Importantly, Why Are You Upgrading: (e.g. I'm having trouble running game X or my PSU broke): my laptop hard drive failed and I want to get something more powerful an gaming-capable.

Solution
That Dell server is bigger than you think and will make a fair amount of noise. Also, those are older, slower Xeons. Forget OCing and you have to use server type (more expensive) memory.

These are not really well suited for gaming and I would not recommend trying to make them so. I would pass on this offer if gaming is your priority.
