Hello all, I'll try to keep this as short as possible.
Okay so I've been working at a company since junior year of high school (about 7 years now) as a 'Computer Operator'. I never really have any expectations of staying there after I was done with college because it was truly a family-styled business consisting of 2 employees and the boss who is 71 man who wasn't looking to expand his business. I figured by the time I finished college he would be ready to retire and we would all go on with our lives, however earlier last year we decided to merge with another company who is expanding and growing. They are very interested in me working for them as their Senior IT position because they have always been outsourcing anytime they had a computer problem.
I am fairly knowledgeable when it comes to consumer computer problems, and a bit less when it come to printer and email problems. The problem that I am facing is that they are talking about setting up servers, networks, server networks, network servers, server network printers and whatnot (you can see just how knowledgeable I am in these topics) now that they have an 'IT guy' and other things that I know almost nothing about other than the basics. When I was working for my previous employer he never needed a server and a P2P network worked fine for the few of us. I am currently getting my degree in computer science and am about 1 year away from graduating and so far the classes that I have taken are all what I call 'foundation classes' (Advanced Data Structures, Databases, Digital Circuits, Telecommunications, etc.) Once I get done with my degree they are instantly going to start throwing all of this stuff at me. I have no problem learning any of it but right now I feel like it's a little over my head.
TL;DR
Very small, family owned business merged with expanding company that wants to promote me as Senior IT position (only IT person) once done with Computer Science degree. I know little to nothing about servers, networks, etc. that said expanding company is wanting to start using. Questions below.
My questions are:
What are some credible sources that I can read up on for learning about company servers, company networks, and what they are capable of? I consider tom's hardware one of the only credible sources in my book and this is where I go 95% of the time when I can't seem to figure out a computer problem.
Also while you're at it if you can send a couple of links my way for network printers and emails articles that would be great too. Or really anything you think as starting out IT person should know starting off.
Thank you everyone who replies in advance!
