Is there such a thing as a rack mounted wifi router to go with my "in process" network at home, getting a 12U rack to mount the server and the switch, 12U as I can't find a nice 1 that is smaller, 9U would work fine if someone has a suggestion, while I have room to use up, is there such a thing as a rack mount wifi unit so I can use tablets and phones and laptops on the network, or are they all as expensive as the few results google threw at me?

Boy oh boy, I hope you got all silent components in there and not throwing much heat, but winter is coming so it may work out, during the winter anyway!

My rack happens to be centrally located and I have an Apple Airport 4th Gen, the pizza box one. Just about all of the WIFI routers today are tall and unwieldy for rack mount. Another option is, you can perhaps attach external antenna to it and have the antenna a little bit away from the rack.

It's mainly a storage server more than anything, so should ok heat wise, will have to see how silent everything else is later, Thinking I'll jsut get a desktop antenna and just place either on top of the switch, or on the desk depending on how badly being under the desk affects the signal, I hope not too much but will have to see, this wasn't because I want it to be server mounted, more because I have 7U of empty space and want to try and fill a little more 😛

Rack servers are far from quiet, very loud fans to push the heat out due to the form factor and rack mounted equipment normally goes in to server rooms. You should seriously consider getting a tower server instead unless they go into an empty room.

balls, really? I was thinking it would be fine with a max of 4 fans, which will be noctuas and a absolute max of 12 drives, but starting with 6 6tb drives, so won't need an expansion for a while. only went with a rack mounted case as I couldn't find a tower for the board I'm getting, which is SSI EEB sized...
