I recently upgraded my home server to Win10x64. This morning the server was non-responsive (could not access through HTTP or RDP). I had to forcibly power off the server at approximately 7 am since it was not responding to shutdown requests.

It booted just fine and I checked the system event log. The last message was at 10:57 pm:

The start type of the Windows Modules Installer service was changed from demand start to auto start.

An error message was logged at 7:06 am after I forcibly restarted the server:

The previous system shutdown at 10:59:07 PM on ‎9/‎9/‎2020 was unexpected.

What the heck? The system was not shutdown at that time, but I assume this is the time Windows became unresponsive. Please help me determine the cause of this.

...Update...

Although there wasn’t any error in the event log, I do see that Windows decided to automatically install an update about 3 min before the crash. I strongly suspect that the crash was due to Windows update.

I have disabled auto updates using Group Policy until Microsoft can get its act together and stop pushing updates that cause a system to go down.
