The Service pack starts out ok, then a little way into the process it says
"cannot back up oeupdate. Access is denied": with options to retry, abort or
ignore. The only real option is to ignore, and it carries on. About 5 mins
later the whole process aborts saying sp 2 has not installed. press ok to
undo what its done, and after its done that, it says windows has been
partially updated, and may not work correctly. Never seen this before, has
anyone else? Its a legitimate copy of XP pro. Thanks for the help. Cheers
Tony

See if this helps:

You receive an "Access is denied" error message when you try to install
Windows XP Service Pack 2
http://www.michna.com/kb/WxSP2.htm#Cannot_install_Service_Pack_2

BTW, you got another post asking about registration. Registration is
completely optional and unnecessary. That certainly would not cause the
issue.
