Set External CD ROM as default (Windows XP emulator)

After lots of trying I've managed to set up a windows XP emulator to run old games that I have that wont work on windows 10.
When I try to run I'm prompted to insert the CD ROM into the disk drive, I have the disk but it is connected using an external USB disk-drive as my laptop does not contain one, my guess is that it wont recognise this external hard drive as the CD drive hardware - is it possible to set this external disk drive to be recognised as the default?
