[SOLVED] Setting up cable modem duplex home?

Living in a duplex home a wall goes down the middle of the house to separate me from the neighbor.

On the back of the home there is one power pole located in the middle ie feeds two power boxes.

There is one main line off the pole, the cable line going into one box mounted on the home. There is a two way cable splitter connected to the main cable the neighbor uses one feed off the splitter to their cable modem for internet.

I just sighed up for cable internet and I'm waiting to get the modem and was wondering about using the only cable line that is already in use? and just one box being there? and not two main cable lines and two boxes since this is technically two homes? That to me would seem like a more normal way to use a cable modem.

Thanks!

It's been 15 years or more since I used a cable internet connection but back then all of the data for our neighborhood went over the wire to all of the homes and the modem just pulled out the data for the specific modem I was using. I would occasionally notice it slowing down and it was typically at the end of a school year when all of the college kids came home for the summer and the wire got loaded more heavily.

I don't know if it still works that way but I suspect it does. In which case it doesn't matter if you have one wire or two coming into the duplex. They will both be carrying the same data.

What's outside should not concern you. The ISP treat the 2 residences as separate. The ISP will bring the signal to a coax outlet inside your home. This will be a very good time to request ISP exactly which outlet, the ISP may or may not able to do this for you depending how your place is already wired, but gamers want the modem/router in the same room as they are. Very oftenly asked question AFTER the fact.

There is only two options for internet that I can use DSL and coax cable for this home. One comes from each provider, are you using fiber optic? The provider with the coax cable setup gives a better price/speed than DSL. I bet fiber optic is better then both on their good days!
