I've been a long time fan of this website... Has helped me through a lot of jams. I just joined and this is my first question, so please don't rip me apart for my ignorance. I started at a small engineering firm about 2 months ago. They have 8 computers on a wireless network with no servers. I finally convinced them to purchase a file server. After I upgraded the pcs and laptops,all i had $ for was a Pavilion P7-1451. AMD processor, 4TB storage (2 disks) 3TB external, 24GB DDR3. Windows 8 64, about to be replaced with Windows 2012 Server Essentials. My question to you all is this... Should I be shot for putting this on here? We only have 1.5-2TB of files to put on here... How should I set the drives up? I guess what I want to know is what do you all think is the best way for me to do this? Is FreeNas good? With Windows at least I get the support. (please don't laugh) Im all ears, and very grateful for your help...

I have 12 PC's (7 desktops and 5 lappies) on my SOHO network.... there is never more than 6 or 7 active at one time. I use a simple 4 bay NAS w/ 2HDs in at at present....Seems a pair if 3 TB Seagate Barracuda XT's would give you 50% more storage than you need with RAID 1 for redundancy (I use Netgear's X-RAID) with room to grow.

Windows 2012 Server essentials is overkill for your use. The alternatives are: Windows 8, setting Pavilion as the server, or Windows 2011 Home Server. The advantages of WHS 2011 are: Cost (less than $60), ease of setup and administration, and it is a dedicated server OS. The disadvantages are that it is not widely supported, MS has discontinued offering it, and it is limited to (maximum) 2 TB disks.
Win 8 can be used to set up a server, but it is not a dedicated server OS. There are various NAS backup/ quasi server packages available from different vendors.
Windows Server 2012 is great but costly.

OK So onwards. It's good that you bought a 4 bay NAS Enclosure, because eventually. that 1.5 TB will grow on you ...Trust Me!!!
1 Question, how long ago did you buy the Netgear Nas? The reason I'm asking is, is it past 30 days so you can return it.
I personally just bought a Synology DS 713+ 2 Bay NAS Enclosue, which has the capability to link another 5 Bay unit for expansion.
The reason I went wiwth the Synology, is because the OS which is called DSM Is the Best on the market! Here is 2 links for you tolook at, so you can c what this 2 bay Nas can do. Check out the specs on •VMware® with VAAI support, Citrix®, Microsoft® Hyper-V® compliant
If your set on a 4 -bay enclosure, go to Amazon n c heck them out. Compare the Synology and the Netgear enclosures and youll c the Syn are just a better product..because of the OS...in my opinion.

So if you can return it, do some more research.
