When I first installed the 2x2gb OCZ Reaper cpu z was reading a dram freq of 400mhz, so I rebooted and went into bios and manually set the frequency (the closest option was 1088) . I booted the pc and ran cpu z and now I get 545mhz which I know in dual channel is 1090 so I was happy with that however when I ran Prime95 on blend test I get a fatal error? Any suggestions' do I have to manually set the voltage as well?

PS I have a Rampage formula and an QX6850 I have the multiplier set to 10 and the FSB set to 340mhz.

Also please excuse my ignorance go easy on me.

thank you for the response that is the ram I have, but before I restart my pc and change those values do I still manually set the frequency as well and if so will the ram work at 1090mhz?

Your RAM is DDR2 800 which is guaranteed by OCZ to be able to overclock to 1066 @ a voltage of 2.1v. The standard voltage for DDR2 is 1.8v and anything run higher than that is overclocked. You might be able to achieve better timings or higher speeds at higher voltages but the only thing you can count on is DDR2 1066 5-5-5-18 @ 2.1v. If you are unable to run those settings stably then return the RAM as faulty.

So I bought OCZ Reaper 2x2gb memory PC2-8500 but essentially the memory is PC2-6400 with the ability to overclock to PC2-8500? ( Yes I know that was wordy)

You are correct.

Unfortunately memory companies in the holy pursuit of money are rather unscrupulous when it comes to advertising their products. In fact it was only fairly recently that there was such a thing as DDR2 1066 but they have been selling it for some time. As you see with Intel CPU's there is a bit of headroom available (some more, some a little less) well the same thing is true of RAM and the manufacturers collected those premium samples and created a completely new category at a higher price to attract the enthusiasts. This and this is the only memory sold at Newegg that is actually DDR2 1066. If you look at CPUZ on your system under the memory tab you will see it recognized as 6400 and if you click the SPD tab you should see several different settings for your memory, some under EPP and some under JEDEC. JEDEC is the governing body that certifies memory settings and EPP stands for Enhanced Performance Profiles which is a manufacturer created setting.

What BIOS are you running? There are BIOS updates for more improve memory compatibility. I also have the Rampage Formula with the QX6850 and 4X1GB DDR2-1066 Crucial Ballistix Tracers. I set the ram at manufactures spec's and voltage and in CPU-Z it is running at 534.4mhz or 1068.8 but when I overclock I set the multi to 9 x 400 for 1600 FSB and the CPU runs at 3.6Ghz but I clock my ram back to DDR2-800 to give me a 1:1 ram to fsb. It runs very stable. Maybe you should try those settings and if it runs stable in prime95 you can bump the ram up a little. Granted you may have to bump the NB voltage up a tick or two.
