[SOLVED] shadow banding in videos

When playing videos, my monitor displays dark, shadowy areas as a series of increasingly dark bands (or sometimes blotches), rather than a nice, smooth gradient. Images are less problematic, but in tests such as https://www.css-gradient.com/, thin bands do appear in the presence of low-contrast dark gradients.

I’m wondering if this is an issue with the type of monitor I’m using, or whether it might be a problem with the display settings or maybe my graphics card, or possibly something else.

Here are my specs:
  • Mac Mini 2018
  • Intel UHD Graphics 630 1536 MB graphics card
  • Samsung CJ791 34” ultrawide monitor running at 3440 x 1440 at 60hz
  • Display connected to computer via Thunderbolt 3
This isn’t a new problem, just one I haven’t looked into yet.

Thanks for any help!

It may be compression artifacts from the original video.
