I don't often comment on sloppy formatting, but given that your posting
contains exactly two punctuation symbols, it's a pity that one of them
is actually wrong: Your full stop should be a question mark. Thumbs up
for the comma though. ;-)

Regarding your ADOM question: Cannot answer this directly, sorry.

But shambling mounds are so rare that in such a case I wouldn't bother
with the dwarven elder quests at all. Just get on with the main quest,
and if you should meet a shambling mound by chance, go back to the elder
and collect the reward. Don't worry about going past the animated forest
or doing the arena too early, just go ahead. Waiting isn't worth it.

Question: do brackets count as punctuation symbols?

In this case, I didn't count them, in order to bring the point across.
But normally: yes, they do.

Er, *close*, but not quite. It should be a semi-colon, I believe, since
it's joining two independent clauses without a conjunction.

I think I've seen five or six shambling mounds in the entire time I've been
playing ADOM. Nasty luck, that. Perhaps the cavernous levels in the
TotHK?

I've also had some success finding unusual dwarf quest monsters in the SMC,
although the usual caveats apply to spending extended periods there.

One other place to look might be the top of the pyramid. I've found
shambling mounds there several times...

I'd be extremely wary of spending almost any time in there once I'm at a
high enough level to begin getting quests from the Dwarven Elder. That
place is such a deathtrap that even if he did find a shambling mound in
there, actually killing it would be hard. The Tomb of the High King of
the Infinite Dungeon would be much better choices in my opinion.

Another option you can try, if you aren't overly worried about getting
all the quest rewards, is the dwarven halls. I've seen Shambling Mounds
in there a lot. Of course, this isn't a whole lot better than the SMC
safety-wise, but at least you could actually kill the thing if you saw
it.

I once found one in NDC (Non-Descript cave), the level before Darkforge.

But I DON'T RECOMMEND entering it unless you're, say, a level
25 wizard/elementalist with good spells or a level 15 barbarian with a
good weapon.

FWIW, I *DO* recommend entering it, as a wizard, well before 25. Clearing
Darkforge itself before 25 is usually fairly trivial if you have some
decent items, teleport control and lightning ball.
