When I buy a new desktop, I would like to still be able to run my old desktop, without hooking it up to a separate monitor and mouse and keyboard.

How can I just power on the old desktop, and then be able to log into windows and run it, without switching the monitor and mouse and keyboard cables?

what about a software KVM switch?
will it allow me to log in to windows on the second computer, or will it run only after I have already logged in (thus defeating the purpose, in my case)

I thought that with team viewer, the 2nd PC has to be already signed into a specific user account for the connection to work .

okay, now I got it. You can set teamviewer up for unattended access. that should do what I want. Then I can get the remote computer to log in, and if it is on a home network, I should be able to access shared files and folders, too.
