Sharing devices on network unsuccessful

First of all thanks to Toms hardware folks, your solution worked and I could access internet in both office PC and my laptop. But now all those device sharing and file sharing applications are not working, saying network error. My office PC is windows xp and my laptop is windows 7 .Am i missing something ?like configuring the new "switch" i got.
I tried ping from laptop to PC . It works

Do you get the "Windows canno access \\computer_name" error?
Try to enable sharing w/o password and when sharing check permissions: you might have to add "Everyone" there so you can access it
Check if both machines have file and printer sharing enabled and that its not the profile that blocks you. If its a network with only your devices and noone else can connect to it you can make it "home network" profile

Thank you very much for your suggestion. Actually there was no problem with the network but with the application I was running. Now it works. Thanks anyway.
