Ship-to-Ship Combat

(newbie question)

This nasty dictator was ravaging my country in a blitz game. Unfortunately,
I had next to no military. I was poor "fodder". I was going to lose, but
I decided to go down fighting! I HAD to strike back somehow!!!

I did, however, have a frigate. He had a nice juicy cargo ship just off my
coast in easy range. My destroyer had mil, guns, and a goodly number of
shells and was in good shape. Now I had never experienced ship-to-ship
combat, so I moved into the same hex as his freighter. I chose "fire",
designated his ship, repeat-firing, and pushed the "Fire!" button.

Much to my dismay, I got some message like "target out of range".
Hmmmm...maybe you can't shoot when in the same hex. So I moved out of the
hex, and tried again. I got the same message. I had then exhausted all of
my shells. His cargo ship Captain was laughing at me! OK, could somebody
tell me how to sink an enemy ship. Also, what kinds of things need you
load on ships? I don't recall loading oil but was sailing.

Were you using WinACE? If so, that ship that was showing on you map may not
have actually been there. Took me awhile to realize that, but, when WinACE
detects a ship (or anything for that matter), it stores that information as
"intel" if it leaves/changes undetected (like maybe you flew an airplane, or
sailed a ship that saw it on a recon mission, but isn't within radar or
coastwatch), WinACE still keeps it there - with a date/time stamp. You moved
to it, and selected to fire at it, which WinACE, and the server, happily
obliged - however, the ship with that shipnumber may have been on the other
side of the world at that point (and thus out of range). You can double
check by deleting the enemy icon, and then look with your ship you propose
to attack with.

oops forgot to finish that thought:

If it reappears, then, the ship *is* there, so, something else is wrong - if
it doesn't reappear, then it was just "old intel"

Ah ha! That must be what happened. Thank you very much, my Captain is now
being removed from the brig!

Thanks, Kelly
