I'm shopping around for a desktop for development (mobile apps / web / unity games)

So far I've looked at HP and Dell but they don't seem to let me select components I want in their desktop (they have a bunch of pre-packaged solutions). I was thinking of going the custom vendor / custom build approach, but don't know any good vendors. Or I guess I could just buy a dell/hq and replace components in it.

My budget is <4k. I'm self employed and would be using this every day. I'm looking for something fast, with:
- At least 512 GB SSD
- At least 12 GB RAM
- Quad core or faster
- Windows support

What's important to me:
- Fast compile times
- Fast disk I/O

I have a W520 thinkpad laptop with quad core (i7-2760qm) and 256 gb SSD that I bought a couple of years ago which I've been using as a desktop replacement. Although it's still pretty fast, compile times are becoming a bottleneck. I'm looking for a desktop that's noticeably faster that I can use at home when I'm not mobile.

Solution
Custom built PC would be the way to go for you. Work with the builder and get the system the way you want it and you will be in a position to do some parts selections too.

Buying a Dell and then upgrading parts will cause warranty issues and a lot of finger pointing.
