Short circuited pc, what needs replacing?

Recently I short-circuited my pc, or I'd assume so as there was a loud crackle sound and a strong smell of burning, with the burning smell coming from the cpu.

I'd assume that I will need to replace the psu and cpu, but what is the likelihood that the motherboard or gpu will need replacing too?

Also what is the likely cause of the short-circuit, as it happened after I unplugged and plugged back in all cables attached to the motherboard. Since the burning smell comes from the cpu is it likely that the psu connection to the cpu is faulty?

I'm afraid I cannot provide much specs info, as the pc was a hand-down:

GTX 970 GPU

500w "fractal design, integra" PSU

Intel CPU

Thanks very much in advance

i would replace the psu, mobo and cpu.

it's very difficult to tell if the mobo is still okay or not, trying it will not be recommended.

here is why.

if one of your cpu vrm highside mosfet is shorted, turning on power will give 12V directly on the cpu, and fry w/e you just put in there without warning.
