Shortcuts on Desktop

I have a problem with a webpage shortcut on my desktop which i want to
delete. The problem is that when I try to delete it, i get a dialog box
telling me that it cannot be deleted as the file name is too long or invalid.
When i try to shorten or change the file name, i still get the same message
which, when i click the OK button,the original file name reappears. When i
try moving the shortcut to a folder, I get a application error message which
goes onto my event log and IE then restarts.
Can anyone assist me on this please? Many thanks.

Try it in safe mode OR go to the documents and settings folder and find the
desktop for the user and delete it from there, maybe !?
