Question Shorted a USB port with a wrong cable months ago, now building a new PC, will that PSU be fine inside my new build?

Hi,

so I had to get a new PSU for my B650-based PC a few months ago cause my old PSU of 10+ years died. I went with a Gigabyte Aorus Elite P1000W (GP-AE1000PM PG5), knowing that I'll probably need to upgrade sometime in the future, so I thought I'd use it for now on my old PC and put it in my new one once I build it.
Well, the "future" came sooner than I thought as I decided to build a new PC now.

Here's what my build is gonna look like:
Motherboard - MSI X870 Gaming Plus Wifi
CPU - Ryzen 7 9800x3d with a Noctua air cooler
GPU - Zotac Geforce RTX 5090 Solid OC
SSD - Samsung Evo Plus
RAM - Gskill Flare X5
And that Gigabyte PSU I'm already using.

Now here's the thing: I had a little "incident" a couple months ago, right when I bought and installed the PSU. I had connected everything and started the PC and it worked fine, but then I forgot I also needed to connect some device to it with a USB-C cable, which I don't do very often. So I blindly reached with the USB-C cable at the back of my PC, not remembering fully where the USB-C slot is exactly located and accidentally touched a USB-A slot with it. And not just that, I did it twice in a span of like 10 seconds (lmao)!

The moment I did it the first time, the PC rebooted and I didn't connect the dots that my touching the wrong port was the cause, and my hand with the cable was still hovering mere milimeters from all the slots and I still couldn't see anything back there, so the PC didn't even finish rebooting as the end of the cable I was holding brushed over the USB-A port once more. Now the PC shuts down. Painfully slowly I realize what was the reason (now the reason I didn't think about it first at all was cause one I never heard that you could short the PC like that and two I thought it was something wrong with the PSU itself cause it was literally my first PC launch with it). It doesn't turn on... I keep pressing the power button a few times - no luck. I go cry in the corner for a bit and come back in a couple of minutes, try the power button again, and now it works!

Fast forward 2-3 months, the old PC has been working fine, never caught a stray shutdown or a reboot or a BSOD since the incident. No noticeable instability (except for my old GPU's hotspot overheating, but that's on her and not the PSU I suspect). So knowing that a 1000W Platinum PSU should kinda be enough for that system I'm building now, I wanted to move the current PSU to the new PC. But I can't help but be paranoid about it. Could it be that something went awry as the result of my double incident? Would it be risky to install it into my brand new system? I'm already way over what I was going to spend on a new PC since the decision to go for a 5090 was quite a spontaneous one (but I kinda need all that vram for my work with AI), so I would really prefer not spend any more on the build.

Additional info: there was no spark or smell coming from PC or the port during the incident; the USB port in question is also working fine; I didn't disassemble the PSU after it happened since it's on warranty, but I took a close look at it and visually it looked totally fine; I don't have any tools to test the current, voltage, etc.
What do you guys think? I'd love to hear your opinions. Thanks in advance!

Thanks for the replies guys.

Welcome to the forums, newcomer!

there was no spark or smell coming from PC or the port during the incident;
If the unit passes the smell test...and you didn't see a blue spark with a pop prior, then you're good.
So how bad would a spark with a pop be exactly? I honestly could've missed it, the PC is on the floor so I didn't have a direct LOS to the port itself. I was looking at the spot hovering over it from above and the port that I shorted is also kinda obscured by all the other cables, so if the spark was tiny I probably could've missed it. As for the pop, I can't tell for sure if there wasn't one. If there was, it wasn't loud I guess. But it's been months since it happened and I kinda let it go from my memory since everything has been working fine and I didn't really plan to build a new PC so soon. But I now I am and I'm worried again lol.

@logainofhades, the price was solid for it where I live at the time and I decided to go with it after reading the review for the model on Cultists.network. It wasn't conclusive but pretty positive overall. Anyway, are there any particular models that would be good for my build that aren't in the premium price range that you could recommend?

Reviews conflict a little. Some put it as a B tier product. Others rate it lower at C. Gigabyte's PSUs are not well regarded generally, but based on this review they have been getting better.

Trusting it to run a 5090 is a little questionable.

List of known good PSUs in order of cost:
FSP Group Hydro PTM X PRO,Gen5 1000 W
Thermaltake Toughpower GF3 TT Premium 1200 W
NZXT C1000 (2024) 1000 W
Super Flower Leadex III Gold UP 1000 W
ADATA XPG Core Reactor II 1000 W
SeaSonic Focus GX V4 ATX 3 (2024) 1000 W

I'm not refusing anything. And the 5090 I got through my relatives in Western Europe significantly cheaper than $3k (we managed to catch one of those price drops that lasted just a few hours in one of the stores). I honestly thought I was good with that PSU for my next build and I bought in less than 3 months ago, so yeah I wouldn't want to spend more on a new one lol. My mistake for not doing more research on some better models before buying ofc, but I live in Eastern Europe and most of the of the models I see recommended on sites like Cultists.network etc aren't available here, and if they are they're significantly more expensive than in the US so squeezing into a $200 budget could be not possible. Anyway, I'm strongly considering getting a new PSU now...

Can you link a couple of websites you can buy from so we can go through their stock to give a recommendation?

Out of this list these ones are available in my local stores and are within ~$50 from one another:
FSP Group Hydro PTM X PRO,Gen5 1000 W
NZXT C1000 (2024) 1000 W
SeaSonic Focus GX V4 ATX 3 (2024) 1000 W
And the Thermaltake Toughpower GF3 TT Premium is only available for the 1000W version, the 1200 W one is not TT Premium.
Which one would you recommend getting?

Whichever is the cheapest one, those are all great units. The FSP and the Seasonic would be my preferences. The FSP is platinum rated so it will save you a few dollars in electricity every year, usually less than 10 dollars in savings though, at least in the US.

Thanks for talking me out of using that Gigabyte PSU in my new build.
Decided to do a bit more research and get a new ATX 3.1 1200W+ PSU for my build. The problem is, again, the availability, and the only two choices that look decent in my budget are Enermax PlatiGemini 1200W ATX 3.1/ATX12VO Platinum and NZXT C1200 ATX 3.1 Gold. Which one?

The C1200 is a great PSU, though the 1200w version is probably more expensive than the 1000w and I doubt the extra capacity will ever be utilized.
