i know it might sound dumb but I've just built a PC using a Lian Li Dan A3 Case and an m-ATX motherboard. The 24-pin motherboard cable only needs to be very short approximately 17cm as measured with a tape measure in a straight line. Can I be pointed towards somewhere with compatible cables / a way to find out if the cables i am buying will be compatible or not?

thanks in advance

Contact your psu maker for the availability of supported shorter cables.
I would be wary of so called "compatible" replacement cables.
thanks did not even cross my mind to contact msi directly
Yes sorry, I did but the cables I found were more expensive than the PSU itself and while I want my build to look nice it's just not justifiable within my budget.

Return the PSU and buy a SFX(-L) unit. SFX(-L) units come with much shorter cables.
thank you but I've just had a look at the sfx-l units in the psu tier list and over here in the uk they are usually about 70 pounds more expensive and considering i got the power supply for 90 pounds i just cant feel justified in spending 80% extra from my power supply cost on just shorter cables.

on that note I have reasonable soldering skills and some heat shrink wrap, would it be safe to unplug the cables then snip them and just solder them together making it shorter?

shorten it yourself.
Most power supplies have the cheap connectors and pins. The only thing that is pricey is the crimp tool.

The housing:

The pins I use that are better than what they sell in their overpriced power supplies:

crimp tool that will work that doesn't cost $100
