Question Should ATI HD6950 GPU from the year 2010 work in an MSI Z690 Tomahawk Motherboard?

Hi,

So my old i7 Gigabyte motherboard kicked the bucket and I'm upgrading my system.. Got a MSI Tomahawk Z690 (DDR4) Motherboard w 12th Gen i9.

I already have an old ATI Radeon HD 6950 graphics card (HIS brand) so just moved it over.

When I initially booted the computer, it did not even go into the Bios setup screen. It said "There is no GOP (Graphics Output Protocol) support detected in this graphics card. Recommend to replace with a GOP/UEFI compatible graphics card..".. then goes to a black screen.

Anyway I read in a forum somebody else had the same problem and said updating the Bios to the latest version solved it. So I updated the Bios to the latest version using the Flash Bios button, which only requires a USB key w the bios on it.

After upgrading the Bios I was able to get into Bios setup and it displayed perfectly on my screen from my ATI (HIS) HD 6950.

Then I installed Windows 10.. everything going OK until.. I install ATI Catalyst w the video drivers. During the setup the screen goes black. I shutdown the computer and reboot.. after POST goes to a black screen. I am able to boot into safe mode or load the restore point before I installed the video driver and get back into / able to view Windows again..

Anybody knows whats happening? Can I get this video card to work with this setup? Appreciate any help.

Worst case may have to lower the pcie setting down to gen 3 in bios, but other then that no reason it wouldn't work.

Well it works prior to installing my video drivers.. I can see everything - Bios setting screen, and Windows but in low resolution.

During the install of the video drivers the screen goes black and is black when I reboot into windows, but you can still see the POST screens..

I would like to also reference this thread where user has the same problem initially w message - "There is no GOP support".. however he instead updated his video card to provide GOP support.

Could this be my problem? I can already view my Bios settings and Windows in low resolution mode..

I have a similar issue but with an even older card(ATI 5970). I can't even get into my bios. Just ordered a new graphics card to see if I can get into my bios.

Try what I did - update the Bios to the latest version using the Flash button in the rear. You have to download the latest Bios, uncompress it and save it onto the root of the USB as MSI.ROM. Stick into the USB port labelled "Flash.." Turn it on and press the button. That might at least let you see the Bios setup screen.

I'm going to attempt now to flash my vBios on my GPU to a UEFI compatible vbios. I'll come back here and let you know if it worked.

I'm going to attempt now to flash my vBios on my GPU to a UEFI compatible vbios. I'll come back here and let you know if it worked.

So to update - I updated the vBios to an UEFI supported version. When it rebooted the Bios detected it and switched to UEFI mode since it could not display in CFM mode.

Everything was fine but 2 things keep crashing my display card:

1) If I install the latest drivers for the Radeon HD 6950 bundled w Catalyst. Then what happens - It goes to a striped blue screen. When I reboot, you can see POST but then it goes again to that striped blue screen.

2) When I install the network drivers and connect to the internet, Windows 10 assistant automatically finds and installs a video control panel and drivers called AMD Windows Blue. This then causes the display to go to a striped blue screen. I could not stop that from happening even though I set "Automatically download manufacturers apps" to No in System Properties.

So I think this is the end. Nothing else I can do.

The problem simply is that the most recent AMD drivers do not work. Its can't be because of windows.. I guess due to the motherboard or processor? IDK

So an update for anyone encountering this same problem:

I ended up buying a Sapphire Radeon RX 6500 XT.

Now when I am installing Windows 10, and Windows decides to automatically install things related to the video drivers, the screen no longer goes blue.

Of course the current drivers and Adrenalin software seems to be playing nice with the system so far.

As far as getting the Radeon HD 6950 to work.. I don't think it's possible. I tried updating the vBios to UEFI capable vBios but the computer screen still goes blue after the drivers are installed. If you can somehow prevent the drivers from getting automatically installed by windows, maybe you can keep using the computer but I couldn't get it to stop it. Once you connect to the internet Windows will install something that makes the screen go blue - likely the driver for the HD 6950.

This video card - HD 6950 had no problems working w Windows 10 previously so it has to be the new Motherboard/Bios combination that somehow causes the problem.
