Should I Bother Upgrading to 6.2?

I will be soon purchasing a Logitech Quick Cam Pro 4000
camera for business communication with an associate in
Colorado. My Linksys WRT54G Router is Universal Plug and
Play compatible and I have broadband access. My current
OS is XP Pro SP2. I currently have Messenger 4.7
installed. Do you see a benefit in upgrading to 6.2
prior to purchasing and installing the camera? Should my
business partner also have the same version of Messenger
installed as well? I know he is running XP Pro SP2 as
well.

Greetings Chris,

Unles the WRT54G has support for Messenger file transfer (as an ALG built-in), upgrading to
MSN Messenger 6.x will allow you to send file transfers.

I think however the biggest benefit in this scenario is that MSN Messenger 6.x allows you to
expand your video window (as shown here:
http://messenger.jonathankay.com/screens/viewbig.gif

In Windows Messenger 4.7, the video window is a set size and quite small (176 x 144).

MSN Messenger 6.2 actually has two video modes (both of which are size expandable), a
"Webcam" functionality (which gives you the best quality and works on all Windows versions
that MSN Messenger 6.x installs on) and "Video Conference" (which is backwards compatible
with Windows Messenger 4.7 and only works on XP).

Jonathan,

Thank you kind sir. I will proceed with the upgrade,
purchase the camera and give it a try. I will also ask
my associate to set up a parallel install in Colorado.
My hope is that all of this will be easy!

A question regarding Windows messenger 7.2 in XP.
Do I need the exact same version of messenger as the person I want to
see/talk to.
We both have windows XP and both have headsets and web cams.
My freind has windows messenger and msn messenger and uses msn one.
I have only windows messenger and when I tried using the camera or voice it
just crashes my messenger.
If I talk to another freind (voice only)who has the same version of windows
messenger then no problems.
Is it because the other person uses MSN messenger and I use windows
messenger that we cannot see/talk to each other?

Hi,

Just for clarification, the latest version of Windows Messenger are 4.7, 5.0 and 5.1 -- there
is no 7.2.

As long as you're the one initiating or your friend on MSN Messenger is selecting the "Video
Conference" option (as opposed to "Webcam"), it should be fine.

However, at no time should Messenger just "crash" due to an incompatibility like that. What
camera are you using?
