Should I Build a Gaming PC With a 6600k, or a 4690k?

I've heard though that the build with the 6600k would be more future proof considering it has the Skylake CPU and DDR4 memory. Do you think that the first build would last me roughly the same amount of time as the second one?

For longevity of a rig I personally always build from the CPU and Motherboard out.

The Skylake rig will allow you to run DDR4, have USB 3.1 ports (for future perifreals and external drives), and a M.2 port in case you ever want to upgrade to a super-speed SSD. In the future you could even upgrade your CPU to the next Intel release as they typcially keep the same socket type for 2 chip releases.

If I was building a new rig right now that I wanted to last the longest, I would build one based on Skylake.

Thanks for your input. Do you think there would be a significant difference in gaming performance? Would there be a considerable drop with the 970?

You would probably not be able to hit quite the same FPS on ultra settings with the Skylake rig you posted compared to the Haswell.

That said, your Skylake rig will be able to play games on high settings just fine for several years, and when you finally needed to upgrade your rig for newer games the only piece of hardware you would need to upgrade would be your GPU.
