Discussion Should I build a PC now or wait for early 2024?

Hello there,

I was thinking to build a new PC for my wife, since she's using a laptop now that is starting to show its age (it's a nitro 7 with an NVIDIA 1660 TI). But I still don't know if waiting for next year will change anything in terms of prices and new things. I'm from Romania and the prices here are kinda high also, this is the site I'll buy from - https://www.pcgarage.ro/procesoare .

I was thinking to get either an RTX 4070 Gigabyte Windforce OC - goes for like 680 euros, or lower the budget a bit and go for a 4060ti 16gb version - goes for 560 Euros or so. For the Cpu is either a i7-12700k or I5 14600k both similar in price - 365 euros or go for the first time for the AMD side, but I have no idea what to pick from here, either from gpus or cpus since I never used AMD because people always told me they have problems with drivers etc. and I would really like something that's good to go from the start since I'm too old to start working with bios settings and drivers over drivers to make a gpu work, but maybe that's something from the past and AMD going well now in terms of optimization and drivers. As a mobo I kinda don't know what to pick, don't know if I should go for a ddr5 one or ddr4 will do just fine for a few years more? If you guys have some options, here will be cool - budget for this will be around 200 euros no more than . Also, a recommendation for a decent case and a decent air cooler for the Cpu will be great - lets say around 200 euros both of them for a budget. As for the PSU I'll go for a Seasonic Focus GX, 80+ Gold, 750W and I think that will be enough no? I've always used seasonic and never had a problem with it.

Full budget is around lets say 1500 Euros for everything without a monitor. Thank you all in advance if you will take your time to answer this.

For the most part 14th gen is identical to 13th gen, so if they have those, just get one. 12700k is not bad at all. Still 8P cores. 13700k has 8E cores and the 14700k has 12E cores. And the clock speeds are a little faster each time.

Comes down to motherboard/RAM price on the AMD/Intel decision. If you can get a B650 (DDR5 Only) board for less than a Z690/Z790 DDR4 or DDR5 then the overall price is worth it.

AMD 7700X is also 8 cores, which is plenty for gaming (so is six, but might as well plan a bit for the future)

Focus GX isn't the best, but okay.

You should look at AMD graphics cards unless you are really interested in ray-tracing. RX6800 and RX6800XT are generally performance competitive for far less money.

Problem is that every year something new or better comes along and prices go cheaper. Best thing is to find out what games she likes playing and such and bulid her an pc base on that! Good CPU and GPU with ram and PSU and good Motherboard and such! 14th gen is kinda like 13th gen nothing changed apart from speed and maybe temp

Seasonic is more like a personal preference since in like 10 years I'm using them, never had a problem with them and the price range is decent for me. I don't really care about NVIDIA features that much, but I really want a cold GPU that runs without problems from the start. I know that AMD prices are excellent atm for what they offer also but I'm also scared to go all in for AMD since I never had a system like that. So you're saying that i7 12700k is still a good pick for 2023 and maybe like 2-3 years more from now? Because the prices go up kinda fast like an 13700k goes for like 460 Euros, is like 100 euros more than 12700k, i was more interested in a i5 from the new generations if is similar in performance with the i7 12700k.

Well atm we play together some FFXIV and diablo 4 and the laptop she's using kinda having problems with d4, but we would like to try out new games that come up next year. As I mention above I think something around 1500 euros will do the job, but I need some guidance of what you guys will pick if so. For reference if my site doesn't help that much we can also use amazon.de since they deliver to Romania also far as I see. - https://www.amazon.de/ - this will be a better pick for prices and understanding, but they do go a little higher in my country. I also know that nowadays each year brings new gpus/cpus and is a bit sad but can we do..

You should consult the latest psu tier list, and narrow down the exact model.

I don't always trust the tier list either. Might have to wander over to Cybenetics and see if they have a rating for it.

I trust that PSU. it is on an older revision of the PSU tier list.

The 16 GB versions pf the 4060Ti are generally acknowledged to be pf no added value/performance over the standard 4060Ti, as the cards lack memory bandwidth to make the added RAM translate to better performance at any tested resolution....

The 120mm fan goes inside the back of that case for a rear exhaust fan.

I would suggest waiting a bit for the 4000 series refresh to drop. the 4070 super seems to have more cuda cores compared to the 4070. This would put it above the 7800XT in terms of performance. So it might be a good buy.

regarding the CPU, i would suggest AM5 as it would allow you to upgrade to the next gen CPU. the 14th gen or Z790 supports only 12/13/14 series of intel chips. so its a dead platform.

A budget B650E will have good VRMs, pcie 5.0 ssd support and next gen compatibility with wifi 6E.

without gpu:

mobo has pcie 5.0 ssd support

case has included fans, digital readout, front panel type C

PSU has 16 pin power connector and ATX 3.0 spec
