hi everyone, i currently am on a budget to upgrade my PC, and i dont know if its better to give my pc 4GB more of ram to make it 8GB, or buy a new processor and stay with 4gb of ram,
my current processor is a dual-core 2.8GHZ Pentium G640, it aint much.. but it can run most games just fine,

I Plan to play Rust, Ark: evolved, Battlefield 3, 4 and those heavy type of games in 720p for now

Buy a new Processor and also purchase an 8 GB RAM Kit rather than a single 4GB module and adding it to the current one.

You can use a memory Kit in dual channel mode for better performance. For a single module, even with the same frequency as the old one, may not pair up properly.

Ram or processor first?

is a i3 quad core enough better? im on a really tight budget

i3 would be fine for gaming and day to day use. Just make sure it is coupled with a RAM kit of 8GB and you are good to go. But before that, make sure the Motherboard supports the new CPU. Otherwise you may need to change the MOBO as well. Better see if you get a combo offer for all three of them.

By the way, if an upgrade is needed, what would be your max budget?

i just compared my cpu and an i3 and they are practicly the same , only 30% better and 2 more cpu threads, not worth the money.. and i5 quad core is out of reach LOL

im going with more ram

JUST MAKE SURE THERE COMBO DEAL WORK TOGETHER ALOT OF PEOPLE HAVE BEEN BURN BY THIS..

Upgrade to an i-5 if you can it will handle the games better. Also if you get more ram you will want to get memory that is paired so they work together better(two sticks). Mixing memory is almost always a bad idea. On most games the video card will give you the most bang for your buck. If you are looking to go with higher resolution you will need a video card that will handle it. You didn't mention what video card you have, would need to know what you have to recommend anything to you. Also what is your max budget, as senseijitus asked?

OP is going for a 8 GB Memory Kit with 2x4 GB RAM. He mentioned he is not able to upgrade CPU even to i3 coz of the cost involved. And upgrading the CPU without upgrading the RAM would also not yield much difference since he is only using 4GB currently.

Good luck with the added ram. I still think you should save up and upgrade the cpu and possibly ram also. It may make it a little later to do the upgrade but well worth it. Your processor is only as fast as it is. When you get ready to buy your ram make sure you check the compatibility list for your board first. If not you will more than likely have problems.

If he's using either windows 7 or 8 it is on the performance tab. Look at the allocated memory and the available memory if the allocated memory is more than the total memory then he will need memory. If the cpu usage is high or maxed out he needs a new cpu. If both are really high then he needs both. If he's working off the drive a lot due to not having enough memory then he will see the biggest jump in speed if he adds memory at the moment.

it is compatible, i have an ECS Intel 1155 socket MOBO , nevertheless im not buying the i5 because its out of range, and an i3 is on pair with my current CPU

i have an HD 7770 1gb DDR5 and its really OP because i game on 720p and that beast can handle 3 monitors at 1080p so yea, make youreself an idea..

Okay. So you just need the RAM upgrade. That's it. It seems you are quiet happy with HD7770. Keep it until you get a much better option for a cheaper price than it is now. CPU upgrade would also depend on your budget. Upgrade it when it becomes feasible for your Budget.

Hey we're just trying to help you out here. If your dead set on one direction why even ask a question? You clearly don't understand the point of memory sticks being compatible with each other not with the motherboard. Good luck Shadow777 sounds like your going to need it.
