Should i buy GTX 960 SLI (4GB) or GTX 980 ?

Solution
The GTX 980 for sure. The only SLI configuration that beats the GTX 980 is the GTX 970'sin SLI. The GTX 960's simply do not have the power.

Not sure what you want in regards for performance, but I got a GTX 970 now and plan to add a second GTX 970 for SLI later. The single GTX 970 plays any game at 1080p, maxed out, at 60FPS with no issues for me. Then I can get another GTX 970 for SLI when the price drops and increase performance and extend the life of my system without another major upgrade.

i heard the 970 have only 3.5 GB

The GTX 970 has 4GB of VRAM.

The issue to which you are referring is only 3.5GB of that 4GB is of the 'fast' variety. If you hit that extra .5GB it introduces substantial latency. This will not likely be an issue at 1080p --- only at higher resolutions, or games with very heavy textures.

If that is an issue for you, snag a new Radeon R9 390.

Well, the question that has to be answered is: Do you absolutely need 4GB of ram on GPU?
I have a 970, and it runs awesome on 1080P, which is all I need. The 970 is such a popular card because it has very good performance for price. And in the near future, it should be relatively cheap to buy another for SLI config.

Wisecracker is correct. The GTX 970 has 4GB VRAM, but 3.5GB is high speed and the last 500MB is lower. When the last 500MB is used it slows down the overall performance of the card as it is limited to the slower VRAM.

At 1080p, this is not a problem at all. At 1440p, you MAY see an issue in some games. At 4K, it does have issues...BUT not in SLI. The GTX 970's in SLI perform better than the GTX 980 Ti at all resolutions.

So if you game at 1080p, the GTX 970 is perfect and will have no issues. If you game higher than 1080p, you will want GTX 970's in SLI or the GTX 980 (Ti).

I game at 1080p and intend on gaming at 1440p later on, so I got the GTX 970 now and will upgrade to GTX 970's in SLI later when the price drops and I actually need that much GPU power.

All the comparisons done with the 960 are with the 2gb version not the 4gb version that the question is being asked about

Actually the 4GB version will not be a major difference. Plus 4GB is just a marketing stunt by NVIDIA., a 128bit BUS is totally absurd to handle such memory with so little memory clock.
