Should I buy the Gigabyte z370 Aorus Gaming 7, or keep the Asus Z97-a I already have? Any help is nice.
i don't care if it only helps a little bit with the performance, I'm just trying to get the most with my all out build.

If you have a Z97 board it's DDR3, don't need to check that's all that board supports. So you will need DDR4 RAM if you upgrade to an 8700k and Z370 board.
Those boards have different sockets, no Z97 compatible CPU will work in a Z370 board. So keep what you have. Even if it was compatible motherboards generally don't affect performance at all, unless you get a board that supports overclocking and overclock.

I'm throwing an Intel I7 8700k 8th gen, will that work with the Gigabyte?

Yes, but it wont work with that Z97 board. You will need DDR4 RAM as well.

I don't know what kind of ram I have, is there any way i can check without ripping it out of my computer.
