This is an Acer aspire laptop with:

  • CPU: i5-5200U
    GPU: GT 940M
    RAM: 8 GB
Hard Drive: A 1 TB HDD with 8 GB SSD
    Display: 1366 x 768
Now this laptop looks amazing on paper but as I researched acer all I see is bad review after bad review of poor build quality and generally bad laptops. Due to the fact that this is a pre-order, there are no reviews for it and the sale is probably going to disappear soon. I'm going to be using my laptop for some minor gamin (LoL, Dota, Skyrim, etc), as well as school work. My budget is $500. Should I risk buying a laptop of questionable quality?

EDIT1: Sorry, I forgot to post link. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16834315016&leaderboard=1

For $500 those are good specs for the price.

Acer is on the lower end of the quality for laptops though, Asus and Lenovo are the top two from a survey done a few years ago.

Issue is that you will get a faster computer from Acer for the same cost as you would from another company and how well the laptop runs is not set in stone. You can look around for a system with a 940M from another brand, but doubt you will find one for $500 especially new and with a solid state drive even a small one for cache or a hybrid.

But do the specs offset the risk of it failing? I already bought one laptop from toshiba 2 weeks ago in the same price-range and it was totally messed up. Toshiba was ranked higher on a list or manufacturers, so would that mean this laptop has a higher chance of failing and needing to be RMA?

I mean if you had my budget of $500 would you buy this or another one?

Price vs quality is a never ending battle, if you want to get something that has a higher chance of failing to get good specs is up to you. If I could only spend $500 on a laptop that I'd want to use for games, I would buy a year or two used one that was made for gaming and would test it first to make sure it did not crash. For $500 new I doubt I'd buy that Acer, that is not a good price point for gaming systems so something would have to be compromised to get it that cheap. A gaming laptop would be a few 100 more, Lenovo Y40 or Y50 are good lower priced systems.

What happened with the Toshiba? "messed up" could be anything. You could have gotten a virus on it. Was it a hardware issue?

comparing price vs quality, the keyboard is going to start having issues soon. also, I experienced difficulty in LAN and VPN connectivity . This does not start immediately though.
