Should I encrypt my RAID 1 drive?

Hi, I just installed the Newertech Guardian Maximus on a Macbook Pro Lion OS 10.7.3. I am formatting and the option of Journaled Encrypted came up.

I will be using the two drive RAID 1 system to transfer data off the 2 drives on my MBP. I am interested in encryption but not if it will slow down transfers. What are the pros/cons of formatting in J/E?

I know Filevault 2 slows the computer down by 10-15%. Will J/E slow down file transfers? Thanks.
