Should i get 5850

Hey guys i have a xfx 680i lt sli mobo with a interl core 2 duo 4400 at 2.0ghz stock clock, 2 gig ddr2 ram,1tb hard drive and sli 8600gt 256mb ddr2 cards.

The thing is i want to upgrade graphics and wanted to get the ati 5850, but was worried i would be bottlenecked if i used it with my current cpu. im only running it on a 19inch monitor at 1280x1024 resolution, and want to play crysis warhead on dx10 and high settings.

so should i get a 5850 or get a 4850 512mb and a quad core cpu?

I would say Get a quad with a 4850 or preferably 4870.

5850 is wayyy overkill for your monitor.
And your CPU will bottleneck the 5850.


With a 4870 you will easily play any game at max details on 1280X1024.

cool a fast response thanks! well today im making the decision and can use all the help i can get to make ther right one, so can a 4850 play crysis warhead at dx10 enthusiast comfortably? cuase i cant find a 4870 and quadcore for under 300

Be aware as well that the 680i won't support the 45nm quads. Your limited to the 65nm process, so the best you can do core wise is the Q6600. Take a look at Hardocp for reviews of cards. If you can't find 1280x1024, 1440x900 is semi close.

I have the HD4850 and I can play anything I want at 22". Max details? Not 100% sure but I am confidant it can do whatever I need it to.

hey guys i read online in a couple of forums that you can actually fit the 45nm quads on the xfx 680i lt sli mobos, im gonna keep looking around for more info anyone able to confirm this?

I'm pretty sure you can put the 45nm quads in the 680i. but you won't be able to overclock it.

are you sure about this? have you done this? i just want to make sure cause i cant afford to make a wrong purchase cause i leave to marines at end of month and want some playing time.

Doing a quick search, I came up with this.

Dubbed Penryn1600SLIX3-WiFi, the new board can be paired up with DDR2-800 memory and, best of all, it comes with support for both Wolfdale and Yorkfield processors, the latters being the 'downfall' of the reference design 680i products.

Looks like most 680i boards won't handle it, but some manufacturers made some boards that could. I would argue you should assume yours doesn't until you learn if it does.
