Should I get a GTX 1080Ti or GTX 1080 SLI?

I am looking to game at 4k and I'm wondering if I should get a 1080Ti or get 2 1080's for the best performance. I don't really care about cost, I just care about performance. For reference, I am running a i7 8700k at stock speeds with 16GB or RAM at 3200MHz.

I am also aiming to get a 4k 144hz monitor when they come out so I would like to run low - medium demanding games at ultra settings and high demanding games at high - ultra. So all of this would be preferably at 120fps.

I would recommend waiting. GPU prices are absolutely terrible right now.
Since youre planning to get the monitor in the future, wait on the cards as well. Maybe, hopefully, things will be settled.

I really don't care about the prices because I'm not getting the cards now. I'm just looking at the performance aspect of it.

I still dont recommend comparing products ahead of when you plan to purchase them. 1080s could be out of stock when you purchase so SLI could be out the window, same goes for 1080Tis, so you may have to go the 1080 route.
There may be different options in addition to availability by then as well.

I don't think you understand what I am asking. Only comparing the performance, would it be better to get a 1080Ti or use 2 1080's in SLI? It's not about purchasing the cards or anything else. I just want to know the performance difference of the two setups and which one would be better.

You will win synthetic fps benchmarks with dual GTX1080 cards.
But, your gaming experience will be better with a great single card.
Dual gpu is prone to stuttering and screen tearing.
More games are not supporting dual gpu.

I get what youre asking, but I was also adding my recommendation.
That being said, it comes down to the games you plan to play and how well they support SLI.

SLI is a dying principal, with fewer games utilizing it. If you play games that actually use it, are prepared for the potential latency increase, and dont mind the other issues, the two 1080s would situationally perform better.

I vote for a single EVGA 1080 Ti FTW3 Hybrid GDDR5X GFX card.

I picked it up for $859 on the 7th of this month. I've learned since then that I didn't overpay for it beyond what's normal. It's such a cool card on so many levels. They started with a custom PCB. I don't use a custom cooling loop so that's fine with me. The amount of cooling that has went into this card has some calling it over-engineered. This may be due to the VRM debacle a while back. It has plenty of thermal tape inside keeping tinier parts cooler. Its 120mm AIO liquid cooling system is more than adequate for cooling. It does have RGB lighting on the back and top of the card. The customizations open to the user allow them to match the color scheme of any PC on the market. It also has G P M underneath EVGA Hybrid on the top of the card. A quick glance shows it's blue. My temps. are fine. If my GPU, power or memory temps. get out of hand they will turn yellow and then red. Of course the user can change the colors. The user could also choose to turn every RGB element off sans 1 tiny FTW3 element on the bottom right of the top of the card.

I haven't seen my card past 50. It may have gotten to 51C but I'm not sure. Gaming when my GPU is in the 30's and 40's is odd for me but I appeciate EVGA's cooling solutions for this card. With EVGA PrecisionX I can also enable KBoost which trumps GPU 3.0 meaning it won't downclock itself. Kboost isn't available from other AIB partners. It'll run at a solid 2GHz during gaming.

21 are sli it's a matter of games you play I got my 2 1080gtx in March 2016 have 2012-2018 mostly 2014 on games that were not sli are and alot that first had troubles are fix and seeing alot SLI games doing 60% to 90% each card I feel If a first person shooters or open world first and 3rd shooter SLi s very good in games. metro 3 will need sli some open world if ultra settingx AA vsync on (no G Sync monitor ) best setting nvcp. I want close to 144+ to match monitor 144hz and to stick avg 120+ -144+ hard 110-130

32GB DDR4 PC 3000 overclock tad more
2 SLI 1080GTX SC 2114/5508
2X480GB SSD HD SATA 6GB RAM CACHE
I hope to hold 2 years more with setup
