Trying to figure out which card to get, I really don't care for the 970 because I really don't like to put power consumption over performance even if they do perform the same. So I'm trying to figure out if I should get this r9 290x sapphire vapor I think it's called for a $280 at this computer store having a going out of business sale or this gtx 980 for $500. I have a 1440p monitor so I can't decide which one. I was waiting for the 390x but after the rebrand thing I really don't care about it anymore.

The release for the new AMD cards are in 5 days. I would hold off and see what benchmarks bring to the table. Since youre considering a 500.00 video card I would suggest you wait as there may be some price shifting and may open up some options you'll be sorry you didnt wait for if you buy now.

It would suck to see you couldve had a the 980 for cheaper or even a 980ti for a little more.

Just my opinion...

Are we talking outta the box or after both are overclocked ?

The 290x has a slight speed advantage at 1440p "outta the box". But the 970 will OC much more (18%) than the 290x based upon Techpowerup's data. Which one you pick will depend upon the games you play.

Cost wise, the Sapphire 290x is on newegg for $325 ... The 970 is about $330; the 980 starting at $480 is about 15% faster than the 970. When considering cost, make sure to consider the difference in PSU cost unless you already have one adequately sized. Each AMD card will need about 100 watts more than the equivalent mvidia vard.

The 300x series is already on sale at some outlets .... oops. .... with the Fury coming in 3 days.

No matter which way ya go, .... I'd sit and wait and see what impact the 980 Ti and new 300 series cards have on the price structure of the market once they are available in quantity. Based upon leaked Firestrike scores, I'd expect that The Fury's out of the box performance will fall between the 980 Ti and the Titan X but when both overclocked, if past performance is any indication, the Ti will have a slight lead when both are overclocked.
