Should i get a new graphics card or a new processor?

I'd like to preface this by saying that any suggestions are welcome and helpful, and that i know very little about what different things do in computers. That is all.


I want to get a new graphics card (GTX 1070 to replace my GTX 950), but i was advised to get a new processor instead. My current one (AMD FX(tm)-6300 Six-Core Processor) Works for some games, but not well for bigger games. I want to play bigger games (Rainbow Six Siege, Battlefield 1, Battlefront II, etc.), but my computer doesn't run them too well. I don't know how many things I'd need to upgrade for a new processor to work, but I'd like to.

To sum it up, i don't know if i should get a new processor or a new graphics card.

What is your total budget? Your FX will drag 1070 for sure, you will need a full upgrade. What is your monitor resolution and refresh rate btw?

Mon res is 1920x1080 and my refresh rate is at least 60 hz although it may be 120. I am not sure on exactly how to check that. Total budget is around $600 (ish).

vapours suggestion is spot on. keep in mind you can sell a lot of the parts youll be replacing and net 150-200$ that you can put towards new build and go up from your 600$ limitation. just an idea if you do do that then i would replace the r3 1200 with the r3 X series and possibly go for 16gb of ram instead of 8 for future proofing! good luck!

If I were you I would save a little more than spend the extra money buying a gtx 1070 & at least ryzen 5 1400 with some 8gb ddr4 3000 ram, vapours suggestion works well but you're going to regret not spending the extra money if you really want a gaming computer that plays those games on higher settings than low/medium and that will keep up with newer games that come out.

Getting a ryzen 5 1400 with mb/gtx 1070/8gb ddr4 3000/550w psu will cost you about ~$800-850 (also recommend doubling up the ram later on to 16gb)

It's happened to me before where i didn't spend the extra 200 bucks to get the better rig and I had to spend another $800 to upgrade it just a year later.

fx 8320 or 8350 would be a small upgrade for you, ofcourse gettin ryzen is better but if your on tight budget fx 8350 would be a upgrade

Sorry Sipon, but youre way off base here. Someone who is on a $600 budget should NOT be dumping 2/3 of their budget on a 1070. It will be hugely bottlenecked by whatever other components their leftover $200 can afford.

also, a ryzen 5 1400 isnt going to have much of a performace boost over the ryzen 3 1300x, for gaming atleast. if youre doing something with production, then the R5 will outshine the R3 for sure.

not to mention its just kinda rude to tell someone who already stated they have a $600 budget they should spend nearly $900. He needs more than just CPU to change platforms so yeh...

@OP i am running a Ryzen 5 with a GTX 950 still. I am waiting til after christmas to move to an rx580 or gtx1060, in hopes the ethereum craze will have passed a little by then, or maybe ill just find a lucky sale by then.

Can't believe that you actually think something like this is rude. It is absolutely a better idea for him to save up a little longer and spend a couple hundred more and get a far superior rig. Spending money on a sub-par gaming setup like that will leave him wanting more in the soon future and he will have to toss the gpu/cpu aside to get newer and better equipment= wasted money with spare parts sitting around. Doesn't seem like he's an enthusiast so there's no point for him to have extra parts laying around. I actually find it to be rude that you wouldn't offer different suggestions to him because clearly he doesn't really know what to do as of now.
