I've currently got a Corsair VS550 and my pc specs are:
i5 6400
gtx 1050
8gb ddr4 ram
120gb ssd
1tb hdd

I'm thinking of buying the new GTX 1170 once released, should I buy a new PSU to ensure that it doesn't blow up? I've heard that the Corsair VS series are prone to failing

It definatly would not hurt at all. The vs series is more meant for office computers and is not made to have long high loads on it (which happens when gaming and thats where they do fail).

What PSUs would you recommend? I've been looking at the EVGA G2 650, reviews say it's a very good fully modular power supply. I would have upgraded to a better quality power supply anyway, so the fully modular part of that is a bonus, should I go for it?

I would wait to get one unless you see a nice sale on a new PSU. and then get one if you get the GTX 1170 if it needs more power.. IF you plan to OC then I would get a bigger one. I have a corsair HX650 I still need to RMA that died on me (just unstable not 100% dead).. I got a new EVGA 650 watt g3 etc.. one that is much nicer then my old corsair and so far stable unlike the corsair one..

IF you are not having any current issues I would just stick with what you got :) save the money for now

OH and if you get the a new expensive nvidia card?? wouldn't you need a better CPU too? not sure if an i5 could keep up with it as it may become a bottleneck. I have an Ryzen 1800x and that is a lot faster then the i5 you have as I am pretty sure your i5 would not be fast enough to keep up with the new nvidia card.

and if you are going to upgrade your vid card I would also get more ram too.. it can make a big difference in games.

Just food for thought.

Next year I'm going to get one of the new Intel CPUs, well that's if they release any new ones, if they don't I'll just go with an i5 8400 and a z370-p, aswell as get another 8gb ram. Just getting the graphics card now as they are released less often
