Should I get an AMD or Intel CPU?

I am going to be building a computer soon and I want to make it cheap. AMD parts are altogether a LOT cheaper than Nvidia, Intel, ETC. I am getting an R9 280x GPU and my friend said that AMD CPUs and GPUs work better together over say Intel CPUs and AMD GPUs. Is this true?

really depends on what you're doing.

For gaming go Intel, they're great overclockers unlike AMD which used for multitasking, editing and such

Well the card you choosen is a good card its more like a radeon 7870 rebadged but in order to drive that card so it dont bottleneck you need a good cpu a intel 4670 k version will run you around 239 bucks on newegg and a 8350 from amd will run you around 199 at newegg weather you choose intel or amd the card will work on either system.
But your cheaper of the 2 systems are going to be AMD .
Also you dont want to buy some really cheap dual core cpu to push that card because it wont happen like I said its going to bottleneck.
So its like building a race car. fast engine= cpu= fast tranny=gpu- fast rearend= Good board Good memory- Good Cooling - Good hard drive.. Any one slow item in your system can slow your system down.

AMD and Intel CPUs work equally as well with both AMD and Nvidia GPUs.

The only real exception to this would be if you used an AMD APU and Crossfired it with an appropriate AMD GPU.

Intel for gaming. AMD isn't bad, but it uses a fair bit more power to achieve similar results.

For current and older games Intel holds an advantage due to superior single core performance. However the gap is closing and is predicted to continue to narrow as more and more games utilize more cpu cores.

To my knowledge, cheap can be a relative term. For an example an i5 3570k, will cost more upfront; say about fifty dollars more than a fx 8350.

However, the i5 is a more efficient cpu, that will probably save you roughly $20 a year less (here in Canada and the US, can be a great deal more in Europe). So over the course of three years, the usual minimum before an enthusiast upgrades his or her PC, the i5 has actually saved the consumer ten bucks.

And that's without mentioning the superior all around gaming performance you get with an i5.

3570k as stated in my second sentence. It's usually the Intel cpu compared to an 8350.

I have been thinking of the I 5 4670 but whats go me on hold for now is its 219 for the cpu the k version is 239 and the 8350 is 199 and from what I have seen and what I am told the 8350 and 4670 are on equal grounds but I am waiting to see what intel or amd pulls our of there hat first of the yr cuz I have everything for my next build except the board and chip.

They're not really on equal grounds. Anything the FX 8350 does better than an i5, requires a fair bit more power. Also bearing in mind the FX 8350 is clocked at 4ghz while the i5 is at 3.4 ghz. Once you match clock speeds the FX loses most advantages it has, and still consumes more power.

Oh I understand your power issue and fact no pun intended just wanted your input my last intel system was way back with the prescott chips was single core dual thread 2.8 people called them presshots! and yes they where so thats been a few years back and then I belive a 6300 core 2 duo which was a nice chip at that time.

I have an i5 3570k on an Asrock Z77 Extreme 4 motherboard with an HD7970 gpu. This stuff is all last gen, so I would recommend the next step up for each one.

Well robnof I have 3 systems but probably go intel after first of the year waiting on what amd will do with there apu chips.

I have the trinty 5800 k
richland 6600 which is a apu and a fx 6100.
The 6100 I use for my media center in the house for movies and such not all to impressed by the bulldozer chip.
I actually game on the apu,s
with the trinty 7950 radeom core edition.
And the Richland chip has crossfire 2x 7770 no lag they both run well but if the amd Kaveri isnt as great as they say or something else from amd I most likely will buy the 4670 from intel.

And @johnnyb105 I really don't like your negativity to my definition of cheap. By cheap I mean not spending $1500 on a computer that will last maybe 2 years. I am not going around and throwing my money at computer parts just because they look cool. I know my shit - just not on this particular topic. So if you could please sir, not be so negative towards my definition, that would be nice.

I very much doubt you'll be able to tell the difference, other than the size of your wallet. FX-8320 with an R280X will perform super awesome plus you can overclock the cpu (and gpu if you want).

AMD is definitely less expensive upfront and are still pretty awesome cpus. My 1090t is still going strong inside my media server.

However paying less upfront is a trade off as they do lose some ground in gaming performance and efficiency to intel.
