Should I get an External HD on this scenario?

Hello everyone!
I was deciding on which CPU to get for a pure, gaming machine. I decided to go with the i7 7700k,since it was winning in most cases in games against a Ryzen R7 1700, and as I was not going to do any type of workload on the CPU. But a month ago, I decided outta of nowhere,to start studying game develop and 3D animation, using Blender,3D max and some game engines, like Unreal Engine 4 and Unity 5. Now,I'm only studying on the weekends, just like a hobby, and the rendering time on the 7700k OC to 4.9Ghz is just fine, since what I do is really light right now. I also use my GTX 1080 Ti when I need to render faster, using the CUDA technology.

But here is where things get interesting. My girlfriend has her PC next to mine,in the same desk ,she has a r7 1700,since she does a lot of editing for her work, but on weekends, she doesn't use her PC so much,so I could use for rendering some more heavy loads, with better quality. I thought about buying a External HD with a 3.0 USB connection,do whatever workload or gaming on my PC,and render on her PC.Of course that will be possible when she is not using(she doesn't use a lot on weekends), in such case I will just use my GPU,which is faster anyway.

So my question is,do you guys see another alternative for this matter?
Is an external HD a good solution?
And I got say that the time I lose is just fine,is just that I see this as wasted opportunity, since if I render on her computer,I will not lose any time at all!

Solution
If you are talking about directly sending the final render to the external drive, I would use an esata drive instead of USB3. Most drives that have esata also have USB3 connections.
