So I'm putting an intel machine together using pre-owned parts. And my knowledge in intel isn't great. My question is regardless of generations, ram, etc and purely CPU vs CPU, should I get the i3-9100f or the i7-4790? Looking at benchmarks score it seems that the newer i3 beats the older i7 yet the older i7 seems more expensive and in general I feel intel users look down on i3 XD. Is there an advantage that the i7 has that I'm overlooking? Which should I get?

Making sure you first realize that the assorted generations of CPUs all typically require different mainboards ...and RAM (DDR4 vs. DDR3 for most things 6th gen or later)

a 9100F will require an 8th gen board with an updated BIOS, or a 9th gen board, w/ DDR4.

I'd advise against most quad cores these days for gaming, what with decent prices on the AMD R5-3600 and a compatible B450/B550...if just general purpose E-mail and surfing, almost anything works fine, with good prices on Intel's newer 400 series boards (B460 costs much less than Z490!)and the i3-10100.

i7-4790= $120
i3-9100f= $80

  • The 4th gen is a dead socket so no upgrades.
  • The 8th and 9th Gen Intel with the right motherboard will have plenty of life.
  • The only Ryzen chips in those price ranges are the 3200G "The i3 is faster" and the 3100 " Which is faster than both but also sold out"
  • The only reason to even consider 4th gen is if you come across them at a really low price on the used market, usually as a combo.
