Should I get into mining...

Hey guys,
So i just got my hands on 2 Radeon HD 5870's. For starters, they were free, so i am not worried about the whole "the cards will pay for themselves."
I have read a bit about GPU mining and have a couple of components lying around that I know will work:
1) 500GB HDD
2) Display (1280x1024 Resolution)
3) Mouse and Keyboard

Alright, so I have a few other pieces of hardware, but I am not sure if they will work or if they are worth using:
1) ECS EliteGroup A780GM-A with AM3 socket compatible bios upgrade. link: http://www.ecs.com.tw/ECSWebSite/Product/Product_Detail.aspx?DetailID=892&MenuID=20&
2) 4 x 1GB DDR2 RAM (with the above mainboard)

First Question:
Is it worth it? How much money can I mine from these cards, and what should I mine (I read about all sorts of different coins out there, not sure which one to do).
Will this hardware work? I read somewhere that you can use PCI-E x1 to x16 adapters for the graphics cards, but will that diminish performance?

If the above mainboard and RAM will not work, can someone recommend a cheap and viable alternative?

Thanks,
