Should I get the Nvidia GTX 1080? or wait for the 1080 TI for Overwatch?

I currently run a regular GTX 780 which I've had for years with a 1440P 144hz monitor. For most games I play this has been fine but since Overwatch came out I cannot play above 120+ FPS unless I low the settings to medium or below. I played TF2 for years so playing at FPS above 120 has been the norm for me for years, and although Overwatch is playable at the lower graphical settings I'd really love to play it on max settings, 144hz 1440P. On medium settings alone it tends to drop up and down a lot too especially in full screen windowed mode.

Should I invest in the GTX 1080 as my upgrade? Will it be enough for what I am looking to do with Overwatch? Or would it be wiser to hold out for the GTX 1080 TI which I've read about?

Edit:
I am running an i7-4770K with 32 GB of RAM.

Suggestions would be great, thanks guys.

I think to hit 144 you'd prob have to turn down to ultra instead of epic. (or possibly to high.) on 2k.

hardware canucks ran this game in 2k with an 2.0 ghz overclocked 1080 founders and he was getting around 130 fps on epic settings. So if you overclock yours a bit and lower the graphics settings from epic to ultra or even to high you should be able to get 144 fps or close. You also need to make sure to lower the render scale setting under graphics to 100%.

tl:dr If you can live with ultra instead of epic and you are willing to OC gpu you should get 144 fps

By the way, if you plan on getting gtx 1080 soon, you should wait for the aftermarket (non-founders or reference) editions. They have...

^I don't think you can justify the performance of a GPU by listing one single benchmark of a single game. The gtx 1080 was definitely overhyped, but it is generally speaking the best graphics card on the market and it was not built to play in 1920x1080 resolution.

I'm not sure if this helps, but hardware canucks has a video of an overclocked gtx 1080 playing Overwatch at 2560x1440 on epic (which is a step above ultra).

It would also be worth it to wait until 3rd party companies come out with their versions of the card, as they will probably have better heat sinks and heat solutions, generally speaking reference cards are not the best in that manner.

There are lots of other benchmarks which would suggest that the 1080 is currently the best single GPU card on the market.

as it turns out the reference cooler is indeed not good enough to control the 1080

wait for benchmarks on custom versions

a 1080 is for the price not very great compared to the 1070 as the 1070 is going to be between 370-425$ and is as fast as a titan x but a 1080 is about 650+ and a 25% increase over the 1070 its not really worth it as for the price with a bit more money (like 750) two 1070s will beat the 1080 for a better price
so your question now is one 1070 two 1070s or a 1080 ti which for a 1080 ti i expect a 10-15 percent increase over the 1080

Well its like if I do get a 1080 be it the standard or the Ti I would like to get the MSI one as I love my MSI GTX 970 4GB. Thou the price for the standard MSI GTX 1080 8GB is over £600 which is just crazy, you could buy a whole computer with that.... my MSI GTX 970 4GB only cost my around £245...

Dual gpu's... yuck. 1 good gpu is worth a little bit extra vs 2 lesser gpus even though they may beat it in benchmarks and fps tests. A single gpu will always run smoother, consume less power, less heat and never have compatibility issues. If money is more of a concern than those things you should probably buy a console.

But on topic. Wait for the 3rd party cooled cards. There are already a few reviews out there that show there are higher clocks with less throttle and lower temps (MSI gaming x). It will run overwatch @1440 144fps with your i7.

what i am looking at is price to performance if the 1080 is only 25% faster than the 970 and 80% more expensive i for one would go for a dual 1070 over a single 1080

Nvidia are backing away from SLI now anyway, I would prepare for the future and go with a single GPU.

^ They arn't backing from SLI. Where did you hear that? They just made a high bandwidth bridge for 2 cards only. The scaling performance from 2 to 3 cards is not good so NVIDIA didnt justify a reason to make a HB bridge for 3/4.

A 1080ti will probably come out when Vega cards come out so they have competition. I'd get the 1080 and play games. But wait for custom cards. The FE card does not have the best OCing without getting near 85c temps. I'd take a look at the Windforce, ACX 3.0 or the Twinfrozr 1080.

I'm assuming you mean 25% faster than a 1070? Because its over 100% faster than a 970... and the 1080 is only 47% more expensive than a 1070 which the 1070 is much more than 25% faster the 970. None of your numbers are close...
Edit for math error :p

1080 is a lot faster than a 970.

put it this way

two 970s are barely any better than a 980ti, in a lot of cases they are equal.

the 1080 is about 20-30% quicker than a 980ti.

plus you only have 3.5gb of cram with 970s. which can get eaten up pretty quickly

the 970s really arent, trust me.

I went from single 970>sli>single 980ti.

barely any more fps in 'some' games, in most you'd get less, people often look at 'max' fps etc but on average I never got much more.

the worst thing about sli is frame time variance, causing stuttering, but I never found a game dual 970s would play that my 980ti cant. but it was a lot smoother, and more responsive, with less dips.

The GTX 1000 series is completely overkill for Overwatch on 'Epic' preset at 1080p, the GPU may work a bit harder at 1440p but really why should you pay £600+ for a GTX 1000 card when a £250 GTX 970 can easily max the game at 1080p no issues.

I just don't see why you think you need a 1080 unless your going to play at stupidly high resolutions.

^ one difference is the 1070-80 will allow you to game at decent levels for a few years, but as it stands, a 970 is already fairly behind, and won't even let him turn on some ultra graphical settings.

thinks like doom/gtav won't give you all they have already because they need 4gb+ vram.

I'm using 5gb+ in gta v
