i just built my computer, fx 8320, r9 280x etc.. and i loaded ubuntu as a temporary measure but i don't know what version of windows to buy for best performance in games,( i don't plan on using it for work or anything just games)

Solution

There's very little difference in performance between Windows 7 and Windows 8. However, Windows 8 does have a much nicer kernel and associated subsystems, along with WDDM 1.2 (Windows 8) and WDDM 1.3 (Windows 8.1) which are very nice when paired with new GPUs. Since you have an R9-280x I highly recommend getting Windows 8.1 so that you can take advantage of DirectX 11.2. You will get used to the new UI very quickly, and can install a start-menu replacement if you wish.
well, you could wait to see what is going to happen with steam os, but right now win 7 are just fine

actually windows 8 will give you better performance in most games and you can install very nice 3rd party start menus that outperform the windows 7 one. For a budget build windows 7 will be fin though.

I don't see any reason to put an OS as old as Windows 7 on a new machine. There are people who complain about the interface, but with Windows 8.1 you can set it to boot straight to the desktop and hardly ever even use the modern UI. Windows 8.1 may have a slight learning curve, but it's a solid OS.
