I am trying to decide between an intel i9 9900k and an amd threadripper 2950x. I will be mainly using the build for autodesk cad softwares.
Why is the 9900k overclocked so easily compared to the 2950x? The 9900k can be overclocked to 5ghz with ease, but only 4.2ghz for the threadripper.

You simply can't compare clock speeds, you can only compare outcomes, if a CPU at 1Ghz could perform the same as one at 5Ghz why would you care?

The question is how CPU heavy is autodesk? How GPU heavy is the work you are doing, how memory heavy is the work you are doing, this will then determine what you system specs should be.

So why compare 5 to 4.2?

How many cores do you need? how threaded is autodesk? is it threaded? I recall doing CAD on what would have been single core machines, if it's simple CAD then how threaded does it need to be?. Are you rendering (GPU), are you doing physics and having parts moving? Are you simulating?

You need to find some autodesk performance reviews and see how perf scales with cores.
