I use my PC for gaming only and have recently been considering an upgrade to the new gen of processors, but I'm not sure if i should just hold off for another year! I'd basically be building a whole new computer as I'd need a new MB and RAM? My main concern is upcoming games wanting the newer guts in order use ultra graphic settings and i want to run 4k really smooth (although i need to get a new graphics card and monitor too for that).

I'm currently running the following build:
Asus M5A99FX pro
FX8320 @ 4GHZ
Sapphire R9 290 Tri-x OC
Hyperx Fury 16GB DDR3 - 1866mhz

I think i might look at going down the 8th gen i5 route this time rather than Ryzen, although from a cost perspective it could be worth it and AMD has served me pretty well over the years.

The crypto craze is over, RAM prices are about to settle and new Nvidia gpus are to be introduced this fall. If you find the performance of your rig insufficient, upgrade it in 2019 or wait at least till the end of November!
8th gen i5 is great for gaming, that is a solid start!

If you can hold your system for still some time, Nvidias next gen gpus should be coming some time later this year, Intel will be releasing 9th gen with 8 cores and AMD will be releasing Zen 2 with supposed 10-15% IPC increase and much higher clocks early next year.

Both give good reason to hold off till next year! I only really thought about it when i tried AC origins, FPS were well under 60 and i figured that was due to it being a very CPU heavy game.

I've looked again at parts today but i think it's best i hold off making impulse buys now then i may be able to get the bits i need cheaper next year!

It's totally subjective if you want to upgrade. If your PC is not performing the way you want and you have the money then yes. I would upgrade it I had an FX based system. There is always the next new thing around the corner so don't let that hold you back you too much.
