Hello everyone.
I recently bought a new SSD (Samsung 840 EVO 250gb) as my OS and programs installation disk.
For file storage I use an old small in capacity velociraptor.
I installed Samsung Magician that has a lot of customization options.
Do I need to install Intel Rapid Storage Technology? Will there be any difference in performance and/or reliability? Please note that my M/B is quite old (Gigabyte P55A ud5).
Thanks in advance.

The Intel RAPID storage program comes bundled together with the Intel SATA Controller AHCI and RAID driver. IF you don't want the program, Intel offers the drives themselves as a zip folder, you can just download that and point your SATA controller in Device Manager to use the Driver that you extract.

i'm not qualified enough to give you an authoritative answer, like moses on the mountain, but can tell you that i run both the intel Rapid storage option and Samsung Magician with Rapid mode enabled and tried dis-abling both, ie trying with only one or the other running, to see if one was interfering with the other. Response time on my computer (i7-4790 w/16Gb ram and samsung 840 evo ssd) seems faster with both running - i couldn't discern any interference between the two, from a user's perspective
