I need to upgrade from my current i5-6500. It is not enough for 4k gaming and my current RTX 2080. Unfortunately I will have to switch motherboard as well since nothing on the standard LGA 1151 seems to be significantly stronger. I am considering i7-9700 and I am really not sure if I should go for i7-9700K. I am not into overclocking at all. The only thing I ever done was to use the MSI afterburner SW. So is the 9700K worth it? In some marketing materials they say that i7-9700 will boosts itself when under heavy load.

The 9700K is a great gaming CPU and right up there with the 9900K in terms of gaming performance and will get the very best out of the RTX 2080. Couple to a decent mid range Z390 motherboard like the Aorus Elite and the like, you will have a gaming PC that is about as good as it gets. And yes the 9700K will boost to its max 4.9Ghz on a single core and 4.7GHz on all cores automatically when under load and if it has decent cooling. The non K 9700 will boost to 4.5 GHz all core and 4.7GHz single core..but it will still be very good.

The other route is going the new Ryzen 3600X or 3700X route which will save you money and be very close as at 4K as the CPU does not matter as much. Personally if money is not too much of an issue and...

Personally if money is not too much of an issue and productivity in terms of semi pro/pro editing, encoding etc are not key, then the 9700K would be my choice.
