Should I sell my desktop and MacBook Pro to get a single, powerful laptop?

Hi everybody.

I currently have a desktop on which I edit 4k video using Premiere Pro and After Effects, for my media studies class, and other projects of my own. I also game a lot on it.

I also have a 2012 15" Retina MacBook Pro, on which lately I've begun to use it far more than my desktop in terms of 4k editing (not gaming obviously). I've been using it more frequently because most of the time I either cannot be bothered sitting at my desk with my desktop, or I'm out at a mates place and I'd like to get started editing almost straight after filming. I tend to spend most of my time at their places, and they live quite a drive from where I live (30 min), and taking my desktop there to edit would be totally impractical.

The thing is, this laptop clearly isn't powerful enough, and lags like hell to the point where lately I can't even playback footage.

I was thinking of selling my desktop, and my MacBook in order to purchase a single laptop that would fulfil the portability needs I'd like, whilst also being powerful. I'm sorta sick of having two different devices, and think having one single portable device that is still powerful would do me better. But is it worth the price?

So I came here, hoping for some opinions on if it would be a good idea or not.

Desktop specs:

i5 6600k, OC @ 4.5ghz
8gb DDR4, 2400mhz
GTX 1070 OC'd
750gb HDD

MacBook Pro specs:

i7 3720QM
8gb Ram 1600mhz
GTX 650m
500gb SSD

So should I sell this desktop here, along with my MacBook in order to afford a portable gaming/editing laptop or is it not worth it?

Specs of the laptop I'd purchase would be:

i7 6700hq
GTX 1060
16gb DDR4 2133mhz
1tb + 128gb SSD
Gsync

Some opinions on if this is worth the money or not would be fantastic. Cheers.

Ok I was in a similar situation where I needed a laptop to play games on the road but also had a desktop, I ended up getting a Asus Rog Gl552vw from craigslist (if you don't mind used) and haven't looked back. Be VERY picky when getting a laptop though because finding a balance between portable and powerful is important. Also when purchasing the laptop make sure it doesn't turn into a 747 engine when under load because that can be a real put off.

Anyway so far I have loved having a laptop to take on school and be able to play games anywhere I want and it is really quiet. What I ended up doing was making a little station by my monitors and having a hdmi, usb hub, and Ethernet hooked up so I can use my keyboard, mouse, and monitors when...

In terms of price my desktop new cost me about $1000 a year ago brand new and my laptop cost me $700 used, and so far the laptop can run anything from Arma 3 to GTA 5 on max settings with ease. If you want to save some money I would recommend hopping on your local craigslist and seeing what is out there but if that isn't your thing then paying the extra penny for a new one would work.

I can't speak much from experience in the video editing but the laptop you are looking at seems like it should be able to handle itself in that regard.

I was very iffy when first deciding to switch to a laptop but they have come so far that I can't even tell the difference between my desktop and laptop performance wise and now I am selling my desktop because my laptop has fully taken over.

My laptop has the i7-6700hq and a 960m btw, so yours would be even more powerful than mine in the gaming department. And the i7 even with being a laptop cpu can handle pretty much anything

If you are looking for around the $1000 range I have had good luck with Asus so far so something like this would be what I would look for: https://www.amazon.com/Asus-GL702VM-DB71-17-3-Inch-i7-6700HQ-7200RPM/dp/B01KB0W4R0/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&qid=1497360661&sr=8-3&keywords=asus+rog+gl

My friend has a dell gaming notebook with a i5 and a 960m and it also works pretty well so as long as you get i7 and a 960m or 1060 you will be set.

My laptop : https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01578ZKPO/ref=twister_B018KGK3XO?_encoding=UTF8&th=1

I would say go for it!

Sorry, I need an advice.
Quick question, does the battery life run smoothly after years of usage? I mean, the first time you buy it, it can hold a 9 hour without charge web browsing, and after a year or maybe two it still hold around 8 hour without charge web browsing (estimated time shown by the battery icon).

Battery life has so far been just perfect, If I am using it unplugged and running a game like payday It will last about and hour to 2 hours depending on how hot it is normally, and If I'm using it for word processing or browsing the internet It lasts me all day. In the past I have had problems with batteries failing like on an old dell latitude but I haven't had any battery deterioration on this laptop yet, don't want to jinx it. I also was concerned about the battery when I first got it so I looked it up and a replacement battery is usually around 30-40 dollars depending on the model you get.

It lasts you all day? That's great, what is the model you got, if you don't mind? I was actually considering to buy a MacBook Pro (I have another choice, GL502VT though I believe the battery life sucks)

I have the asus rog gl552vw and but the only thing ive had to fight it with was the m.2 ssd which this model very tempermental with, Im a little biased but I would never recommend a MacBook unless you are working in an office with other MacBooks for compatability, even if you are going for productivity and want something thin there are several windows models from Asus and HP has there spectre which is pretty sexy.
