So I have a GIGABYTE G1 Gaming GTX 980Ti. I saved up for another but I really like the look of the reference GTX 980Ti. Can I SLI 2 980Ti of different companies? I want to SLI my GIGABYTE 980Ti with an Nvidia reference 980Ti. Is it possible? Also, should I sell my 980Ti and buy a GTX 1080? I don't wanna SLI with another GIGABYTE 980Ti because it will make the case too hot. If I go with reference 980Ti then it will be hot but at least it will keep the case cool. I already have a 980Ti making the case hot. So please suggest me guys, a 980Ti SLI with 1 GIGABYTE 980Ti and Reference 980Ti or GTX 1080? Thanks guys 😀

According to Gamespot the 1080 is on par with 980 SlI except for virtual reality where the 1080 really jumps ahead. 980 Ti SLI is more powerful then 980 SLI so it is very unlikely that one 1080 can out class 980 ti SLI. However with the 1080 almost here I would wait for that. However if you have a 980 Ti already then getting a second one provides all you need for HD and 4K gaming. I have 980 ti SLI on a 40 inch 4K monitor and it provides all the grunt I need.

Thanks

If I had a GTX 980Ti already in my possession, I would wait 3-4 weeks to buy another GTX 980Ti. I am assuming you are looking at the $599 MSI reference GTX 980Ti?

If you look at this chart you will see the GTX 1070 is basically the exact same benchmarks as the GTX 980Ti:

But it will be sold for $379. I am not suggesting you purchase a GTX 1070, because you have a card that is basically just as good. However, I would suggest waiting for the May 10th release of the GTX 1070 and watch the GTX 980Ti prices plummet. Then you can have an SLI setup for MUCH cheaper than if you rushed out and bought the same card today.

Just my $.02

Hmm. Thanks. I think I'll do that. But, is it like recommended to have the same GPUs from the same company? Will i run into any issues if I install 2 GPUs from different companies ?

They are the same GPU, both GTX 980Ti cards. The brand of the GTX 980Ti is absolutely NOT relevant.

Please read the following forum thread for more information.

Every GTX 980Ti is the same GPU, Same RAM (6GB); Overclocking also does not matter for SLI.

He did not ask if he could SLI a random GTX 980; the GTX 980Ti is a specific model that is the exact same in regards to GPU and VRAM across all manufactures.
