Should I SLI my 780 or get a single 980 ti?

Hello,

The title is pretty much my question. I have a Gigabyte Windforce GTX 780 GHz Edition. I can pick another one up for around $275. Would it be wise just to SLI for that price or try and sell my current 780 and put the money towards a 980 ti? Do games still struggle with SLI?

I game at 1080p @ 60Hz. Before I get an influx of, "It is not worth it for 1080p @ 60Hz" comments, let me just say that I know. Even though I game at that level, I want to be able to check everything in the settings menu. I am pretty much set do one or the other.

Thank you in advance for all help!

Well, this really comes down to your budget and plans for future gaming. Also, what games you play. I am not trying to jump on the 1080p 60Hz band-wagon here, but the GTX 980 Ti is a bit overkill for 1080p...right now. With games getting more and more advanced, the GTX 980 Ti would play more, newer, games at 1080p for a longer period of time over the 780 SLI.

Some games do struggle with SLI, that hasn't changed; though, it has gotta a lot better! GTX 780's on SLI would be a great video card system, especially if you can get another one for $275 compared to the $600 for GTX 980 Ti.

So really, the question comes down to how long you want your card(s) to last before your next upgrade and your budget?

Thank you!

Yeah, I mean it is always great to save a couple hundred dollars lol. I don't know. I don't mind SLI, but I really don't want the headache that it sometimes provides. Then again, I could be saving a lot of money.

My advice is neither.

1) No point in buying another 780 when Kepler is on the way out and 3GB of VRAM will bottleneck you. I am in the same boat as you with my 7970.

2) Even the 980 Ti is twice as powerful at best. Is that really worth $700??

I would advise waiting for the new cards from AMD and Nvidia next year - that is unless you plan on going to 4K now.

You could, if you're gaming at 1080p, sell the 780, and jump to a GTX 970. At 1080p the 970 goes through almost all the latest games at about 55-75fps average (40fps low, 100+ fps high). And if you could sell your 780 for $200-250, cost for a new 970 is about $300ish, so you could upgrade for about $50 net.

All in all, scaling for SLI is still a little problematic, it is usually better to go with the single most powerful card you can afford, and considering the net cost would be $50 to upgrade to a 970 that's a minimal cost.

Also, since you're only gaming at 1080p, going with a SLI setup is just not necessary if you can go to a GTX 970. There's a huge difference between the Kepler architecture and the Maxwell architecture. Maxwell is much more powerful and far more efficient.

tldr; sell the 780, buy a 970 since its just 1080p.

I would rather just go to 1440p in his situation since 4k is not stable and requires a big investment just to get 30 fps. Could go for SLI 970s ~$660 or just get another 780 ~$250-$300 and play 1440p like a dream. More and more 1440p monitors are becoming affordable. If he goes 970s he will have better resale value for when the new cards come out next year.
