Should I trade an FX 6300 for an i5 3570K? Which is best? Why?

I have a friend who can get me an i5 3570K and says it's a lot faster in general than my FX 6300 especially in games. Is that true?

Should I make the change?

Assuming it is 1) free, and 2) you are also getting the motherboard....sure.
It is faster.

It's true. The FX 6300 has 6 cores packed into 3 modules, but each core is relatively weak on its own. It excels in things like file compression, but suffers greatly in tasks that require fast cores (like gaming).

The i5 3570K is a great CPU, and it looks like some motherboards for it are still reasonably priced. With a reasonable cooler, this will kick the crap out of that FX 6300 in gaming.
