Should I try 4k with long upgrade cycle

Hi,

You can skip this part:
6 years ago I came here and got great advice for a gaming PC build that has served me well. But an upgrade is long overdue now. As you can see my upgrade cycle is very (too) long. Back then I got a PC with GTX 670, what ever was the current i5 gaming CPU and 8 GB of RAM. For the first year or two everything was running amazing. Then over time I had to start lowering settings to get decent FPS out of new games. I mainly play sim/racing (iRacing, AC, PC2, F1 series) and ARPGs (D3, PoE). Last straw was when I had performance issues with F12018 on low setting.

The question:
Now considering that I will be sticking with my next build for about 4-5 years, should I even attempt going for 4k? Is it worth going for 2080Ti or 2080? Will 2080(Ti) be fine in 4k or just become rubbish force me back to 1080p in 2 years time?

Or should I just get 2070 based build and go with 1440p 144Hz monitor?

I think that, unless you need 4k for, say, work purposes, it's not worth going to. Too many pixels, and you're looking at 2080Ti-only territory.

I personally am something of a fan of ultrawides, so you might consider 3440x1440 if you're sticking with Nvidia cards. Or, possibly 2560x1080, in which case your graphics horsepower needs would be less.

I doubt a 1080 or 2070 would be able to hit those high refresh rates on a 2560x1440 monitor. Definitely fast, but I don't think 144fps fast.
